ABOUT ARRA LA

Throughout Los Angeles, ARRA projects are generating jobs now while also creating the investment needed to help us thrive long into the future. From ambitious "green" programs that promote energy efficiency and long-term savings to infrastructure improvements, ARRA provides exceptional benefits to all those who reside and work in, or just visit the City of Los Angeles. Just a few examples of real results include:

Energy Efficiency - The final LED traffic signal has been installed to complete the citywide Traffic Signal Light Conversion Program on time and under budget. Converting traffic lights and pedestrian signals from incandescent bulbs to LED's reduces energy consumption by approximately 85%. Given that signals operate 24 hours a day, at any given moment the City saves about 7,750,000 watts of energy.

Help for Families - More than 7,000 Angelenos received help from the Housing Department's Homeless Prevention & Rapid Re-Housing Program. This program continues to offer short-term assistance to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless due to financial hardship brought on by the economic downturn.

Transportation - 84 state-of-the-art, natural gas powered commuter buses have been ordered to replace the City's older diesel coaches currently in use. One "clean" coach bus can take 49 passenger cars off the road and provide a lower carbon foot print per passenger mile than any other mode of transportation.

Jobs - The Department of Water and Power has hired and trained 35 formerly unemployed persons to join existing staff in conducting energy-saving weatherization upgrades for low-income homes.

Technology - 2,466 public computers have been purchased to be deployed at libraries, recreation centers and WorkSource centers. All of these computers, along with upgraded internet service, will be installed at 183 locations by December 2011, one year ahead of schedule.

Public Safety - A new, state-of-the-art Fire Station has been opened at LAX, improving the City's emergency preparedness. Additionally, ARRA dollars have allowed for 50 new police officers stationed throughout the City.

At-risk Youth - 9,416 City youth living at or under 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines were placed into subsidized employment earning income, and receiving training and valuable work experience over the summer months.
